brushplay again 2

A third version of the Lily skin is now available at Belleza. This one has red brows and freckles. The face is a great combination of softness and feminity yet thanks to the shading, it doesn’t look too young.

Reading feeds has become very valuable for me since I am often away from Second Life lately and I miss a lot of new releases. I was happy to learn that Emery is joining the mesh bandwagon. I am showing here a yummy top but there is also a short dress with ethnic prints. You can also admire on a lot blogs the new mesh hair by DeLa. The styles are so very sexy and feminine, perfect for the new shape I am working on. I would have wished a bit more contrast in the textures, or roots options and they would have been perfect for me.

brushplay again

I have played again with hair brushes, a bit too much but it was fun so I couldn’t stop. I have refined a bit the Taylor shape so maybe I will release it soon. The body is much more curvy when what I am used to make but it looks very sexy this way while still fitting a size M.

About colors

Hello,

Bobo Blue 2

Yesterday, I have been using another computer to show the last pictures I had taken to a friend. while I did that, I was struck by a change of the colors which were not at all the way I remembered them. They used to be a bit more vivid, asif a orange warm filter was applied all the time. Later, I told about this to a another friend who told me she was seeing them a bit whitsh and then advised me to check my screen settings. After some quick tests, it was quite obvious I was lacking some blue and green and have reajusted my screen settings.

I now see things quite differently. A fun detail is I have always thought my pictures had too much red or yellow so I was trying to correct them thanks to the curves in photoshop. Now, I see them much paler than what I thought. I guess I will have to change my windlight settings for the next pictures.

Bobo Blue

About the styling now. The new tunic and tied big belt from Fishy Strawberry have inspired me this hippie chic look with a new feather vest from So Many Styles (which I have slightly recolored to match the belt). For the chic part, the EXPERT hairstyle from LeLutka is adding a luxury touch.

I am also wearing the new skin from ADDICT, RAIA. I like the way it looks feminine and less sweet and young than a lot of other skins on my avatar. It is definately worth a try though it does not come with plenty of options like we are used to with many skins now, but dark and light eyebrows. You cannot change the eyeshadow or the lipstick with tattoo layers made specifically for Raia and the cleavage option is on the undershirt layer. Old viewers people will be happy to find a skin built the old way while new viewer peoples might feel like this is not enough. It is still a beautiful skin which should suit a lot of ladies.

Meshes: a Revolution?

Hello,

Meshes_001

So here it is, meshes have struck the grid with the new official viewer 3.0 (must have to experience mesh)! I guess most people who are reading fashion feeds already know about it while a lot of residents just have no idea what it is. Is mesh all new? No! Actualy, your avatar is already a mesh. What is new is that content creators are now able to use meshes to build more detailed items and better reacting to physics items in 3D extern softwares like Maya and import them in Second Life. It is basically what is used in any software to create the world. In the past, the limitations in Second Life were such that prims, sculpted prims were used to get around them. For more detailed and better explanations, please read this article By Siddean Munroe of SLink or the Second Life Wiki. You can find free meshes jeans at SLink if you are up to testing by the way.

Meshes 2

One of the best assets of meshes is now your clothes will follow the moves of your body. In the above pictures, you can see the poncho is spreading with the arms while with prims, the arms would go out of it. One of the rules while wearing ponchos was “use soft poses with arms alongside the body”. Another great asset you can see here is that we finally get wide pants to look great as they are made in one piece and not anymore made of several prims which are not always fitting together that great (the knees are a major issue as soon as you bend them a little).

For sure, meshes are offering a whole new set of possibilites to creations in Second Life and I am happy to have new toys to play with. This being said, let’s have a look at some issues with them.

Meshes 3

All the mesh clothes I am wearing in these pictures are from JANE. Janie Marlowe has blown the grid by releasing a whole collection made of meshes. Nonetheless are the clothes of great quality, they are also very affordable so if you want to have a try at it, I recommand having a look at them. There are also free demos for each piece so you don’t have to go broke. The following issues I will point at have nothing to do with Janie Marlowe’s work so there is no need to start a drama here. It is about mesh limitations.

First thing: Meshes which are “rigged” to the avatar cannot be edited in any way. This means they cannot be moved, resized, modified to fit your avatar shape. (from the wiki: Rigged meshes allow you to represent your avatar skeleton as a mesh that conforms to your joints and motions. This means that you can wear a rigged model that changes the length and orientation of your avatar’s limbs and animates accordingly.) The mesh is made outside of Second Life according to a skeleton which is not your avatar shape, probably not even the creator’s shape.

In the above picture, you can clearly see that the dress is going out of the poncho. With sculpties, you could just resize or move the prim a bit so it stays up the dress at all times or almost. Here, with meshes, you cannot move them at all. It reduces styling possibilities. People might argue the poncho was not made to be worn above the dress but at the same time, that is what styling is “putting together clothes and accessories which were not meant as a set in the beginning in a fashionably way”.

Now, I can also use photoshop magic and go aroung the problem but that is cheating and certainly not what it will look like in SL.

Meshes 3 2

Second thing: I had to change my shape. My orginal avatar is rather SL petite. Though creators are trying to provide us with several options, it is hard to find one that fits great for some people. I am wearing the small version and some clothes still look too big.

To use meshes, you have to use alphas which conceal your avatar shape so it does not goes out of the mesh. You can compare it to wearing sculpted prims. This means that the shape of the pants is not your avatar legs. If the creator likes a big gap between your legs, there will be a gap, even if your normally a bit curvy avatar has plain legs. If you like big boobs or on the contrary a flat chest, you will have to count on the creator’s will to make several versions or not, as that means a lot more work for them. By the way, Janie Marlowe is asking for feedback about fitting issues. So feel free to help.

Meshes 4

One of the first thing I have liked about Second Life was the ability to customize my avatar in ways no other game had offered me in the past. My shape is mine, it does not look like a clone. It is not that this shape is the best of them all but it is the way I like it. Most of the time, I was able to modify clothes to make them fit to my avatar. One of my fears with the meshes limits is we will slowly move to a shape standardization to be able to wear a maximum of clothes from different stores and frankly, I am not too eager to look like some skinny models out there.

Meshes such as it is now, is a bit too limited and would require more flexibility to be a revolution. Some residents are already coming up with ideas to make it better. You can vote on this Jira to help improve the project.

Meshes are what prims and sculpted prims were to UV layers in the past: a nice adition to make your avatar look better. The way they are made at the moment is limiting their use and old build ways still have their place in Second Life.

Finally, this is what you will look like while wearing meshes for everyone who is not using the last 3.0 viewer version. Seeing how people have resisted the transition to version 2.0 viewer and a lot are still running on old viewers, think about it twice before moving around with mesh clothes or avatars. To me, if Linden Labs does not force everyone to use the new viewer or a compatible 3rd party viewer, this will be the last and main limitiation to the use of meshes. Seeing the numerous crashes and the lag I have using official viewer, this won’t be the case before long.

Grey Coral

Hello,

Grey Coral 2

I wished I were able to describe as good with words the outfit I am wearing today as images can. The boyfriend blazer from So Many Styles and the Feather Wrapped Fedora from Mon Tissu are the bases, working pretty good together to create a tomboy look. The Leopard Hight waist skirt adds a 80’s side to it. I have always liked the combination of grey and pink, asif the grey was taking a bit away the girly feeling from pink.

Grey Coral

I seem to have a problem with poses recently. I don’t know if I have too few or too many but I don’t seem to find easily the ones I want. As I couldn’t find one I liked to show the outfit and the awesome bag from MR. Poet all together, I have decided to hang the bag as a background item.

Teal Garden

Hello,

Teal Garden

Hart Larsson of PXL Creations did it again, I am falling in love with his new skin, Gaia. I’ve tried it with a lot of shapes and each time, it looks so pretty. Gaia has all I like so much with PXL skins, she is not oily, perfect for photography. In addition to that, Hart has made the shadows of the face so smooth it softens a lot the face and should earn new customers who might have found PXL skins a bit too hard before. Gaia is meant to be a younger looking skin than the previous PXL ones but like always, it respects the shape, doesn’t cover it completely so you can achieve looks a bit more mature.

Gaia is already available as a prerelease for the members of the [ PXL ] Female VIP group (which is totaly worth joining as you get a 10% discount on everything you buy so the initial cost will be rapidly refunded) at the PXL mainstore. and will be released for everyone at the Skin and Shape Expo on May 10th. Check PXL Creations blog for more info and pictures.

Teal Garden 3

I have chosen a top from Mon Tissu and a skirt from Fishy Strawberry, two of my favorite shops for their great quality photorealistic clothes. I remember almost four years ago, when I have tried a photorealistic skirt for the first time. It went directly to the trash bin. For a while, I have been avoiding anything which was not hand drawned because of that very bad photocopy feeling. Since then, fortunately, I have tried others and I love good ones. The hair is one of this week new Truth’s styles which is very feminine.

Teal Garden 2

There is so much going on lately, it is almost impossible to keep track of all the nice releases. I am having a hard time deciding what I like best. That is a relief as for a small period I was a bit fed up with what I was seeing. Let’s hope designers go on creating awesome items once all the fairs are over but let’s also remember there are incredible designers who have steady regular collections, even if a fair is the easy way to shop. And believe me, I am the first one who should visit a bit more and move my lazy ass to stores I don’t know yet.

A Walk in the Dunes

Hello,

A walk in the dunes 3

When I was a kid and a teenager, I used to spend all the Easter Holidays at the Belgium Coast, more exactly, in the Westhoek, a place between dunes and woods. Now, it is full of buildings and all the places where I used to play as a kid are gone. I am trying to recreate an idealized version of it in Second Life where my avatar could have a walk.

A walk in the dunes

For this walk, i’ve chosen a girlish outfit with shorts from Fishy Strawberry you can find in a pack with plenty of other goodies for a very low price at The Dressing Room. The top is a new release from Acid & Mala for only 60 L$ for Super Bargain Saturday.

A walk in the dunes Portrait

The wonderful harstyle is one of the new releases from LeLutka. It is made of two parts, the bangs being attached to the chest but it can also be worn without for a more stylish effect. Note I’ve moded the bows to color them blue as they are normaly only black, brown or tan.
