Toki Doki Haru Jacket in Black

TokiD Noir

Sometimes, when you have an idea in mind to create an outfit, it is tough to forget about it. I wanted to use the new Toki Doki Haru jacket. I like its simple cut, it is a basic for any wardrobe, be it the cute type or a more sophisticate one. But I wanted it in black and it didn’t exist. The flower prints and the solid colors are great but it was not what I had in mind. After asking Maya Levane, Toki Doki’s designer, if it was available, she was very kind to make a black version for me. So I really want to say a big thank you to Maya for being super cute and helping me so kindly.

If you are interested, there are three colors of the jacket available at The Dressing Room Fusion and much more colors at the Toki Doki mainstore.

Leopard

Leopard_007

I know, it is supposed to be spring in the Northern hemisphere and all the designers in Second Life are releasing great springy outfits. But so far, it looks like the change of season has lost itself on the way to Western Europe. If someone finds it somewhere, please remind it to come greet us soon. It will be most than welcome after that long winter.

It is so cold that even in SL, I felt like wearing warmer clothes. Actualy, this mood is perfect as thanks to it, I was able to wear that great tweed jacket from Erratic. By the way, erratic is having a sale with 50% off even on the newest releases so it is time to pay the shop a visit. Beware and update your ladmarks, it is new location.

Meshes: a Revolution?

Hello,

Meshes_001

So here it is, meshes have struck the grid with the new official viewer 3.0 (must have to experience mesh)! I guess most people who are reading fashion feeds already know about it while a lot of residents just have no idea what it is. Is mesh all new? No! Actualy, your avatar is already a mesh. What is new is that content creators are now able to use meshes to build more detailed items and better reacting to physics items in 3D extern softwares like Maya and import them in Second Life. It is basically what is used in any software to create the world. In the past, the limitations in Second Life were such that prims, sculpted prims were used to get around them. For more detailed and better explanations, please read this article By Siddean Munroe of SLink or the Second Life Wiki. You can find free meshes jeans at SLink if you are up to testing by the way.

Meshes 2

One of the best assets of meshes is now your clothes will follow the moves of your body. In the above pictures, you can see the poncho is spreading with the arms while with prims, the arms would go out of it. One of the rules while wearing ponchos was “use soft poses with arms alongside the body”. Another great asset you can see here is that we finally get wide pants to look great as they are made in one piece and not anymore made of several prims which are not always fitting together that great (the knees are a major issue as soon as you bend them a little).

For sure, meshes are offering a whole new set of possibilites to creations in Second Life and I am happy to have new toys to play with. This being said, let’s have a look at some issues with them.

Meshes 3

All the mesh clothes I am wearing in these pictures are from JANE. Janie Marlowe has blown the grid by releasing a whole collection made of meshes. Nonetheless are the clothes of great quality, they are also very affordable so if you want to have a try at it, I recommand having a look at them. There are also free demos for each piece so you don’t have to go broke. The following issues I will point at have nothing to do with Janie Marlowe’s work so there is no need to start a drama here. It is about mesh limitations.

First thing: Meshes which are “rigged” to the avatar cannot be edited in any way. This means they cannot be moved, resized, modified to fit your avatar shape. (from the wiki: Rigged meshes allow you to represent your avatar skeleton as a mesh that conforms to your joints and motions. This means that you can wear a rigged model that changes the length and orientation of your avatar’s limbs and animates accordingly.) The mesh is made outside of Second Life according to a skeleton which is not your avatar shape, probably not even the creator’s shape.

In the above picture, you can clearly see that the dress is going out of the poncho. With sculpties, you could just resize or move the prim a bit so it stays up the dress at all times or almost. Here, with meshes, you cannot move them at all. It reduces styling possibilities. People might argue the poncho was not made to be worn above the dress but at the same time, that is what styling is “putting together clothes and accessories which were not meant as a set in the beginning in a fashionably way”.

Now, I can also use photoshop magic and go aroung the problem but that is cheating and certainly not what it will look like in SL.

Meshes 3 2

Second thing: I had to change my shape. My orginal avatar is rather SL petite. Though creators are trying to provide us with several options, it is hard to find one that fits great for some people. I am wearing the small version and some clothes still look too big.

To use meshes, you have to use alphas which conceal your avatar shape so it does not goes out of the mesh. You can compare it to wearing sculpted prims. This means that the shape of the pants is not your avatar legs. If the creator likes a big gap between your legs, there will be a gap, even if your normally a bit curvy avatar has plain legs. If you like big boobs or on the contrary a flat chest, you will have to count on the creator’s will to make several versions or not, as that means a lot more work for them. By the way, Janie Marlowe is asking for feedback about fitting issues. So feel free to help.

Meshes 4

One of the first thing I have liked about Second Life was the ability to customize my avatar in ways no other game had offered me in the past. My shape is mine, it does not look like a clone. It is not that this shape is the best of them all but it is the way I like it. Most of the time, I was able to modify clothes to make them fit to my avatar. One of my fears with the meshes limits is we will slowly move to a shape standardization to be able to wear a maximum of clothes from different stores and frankly, I am not too eager to look like some skinny models out there.

Meshes such as it is now, is a bit too limited and would require more flexibility to be a revolution. Some residents are already coming up with ideas to make it better. You can vote on this Jira to help improve the project.

Meshes are what prims and sculpted prims were to UV layers in the past: a nice adition to make your avatar look better. The way they are made at the moment is limiting their use and old build ways still have their place in Second Life.

Finally, this is what you will look like while wearing meshes for everyone who is not using the last 3.0 viewer version. Seeing how people have resisted the transition to version 2.0 viewer and a lot are still running on old viewers, think about it twice before moving around with mesh clothes or avatars. To me, if Linden Labs does not force everyone to use the new viewer or a compatible 3rd party viewer, this will be the last and main limitiation to the use of meshes. Seeing the numerous crashes and the lag I have using official viewer, this won’t be the case before long.

Grey Coral

Hello,

Grey Coral 2

I wished I were able to describe as good with words the outfit I am wearing today as images can. The boyfriend blazer from So Many Styles and the Feather Wrapped Fedora from Mon Tissu are the bases, working pretty good together to create a tomboy look. The Leopard Hight waist skirt adds a 80’s side to it. I have always liked the combination of grey and pink, asif the grey was taking a bit away the girly feeling from pink.

Grey Coral

I seem to have a problem with poses recently. I don’t know if I have too few or too many but I don’t seem to find easily the ones I want. As I couldn’t find one I liked to show the outfit and the awesome bag from MR. Poet all together, I have decided to hang the bag as a background item.

Parisienne Boho

Hello,

Boho 2

There were several new cute releases this week-end, including two Dutch Touch Skins, MensJe and MegAn, and a Mimikri dress, emily, which has a vintage boho feel to it. If you are part of the Dutch Touch VIP group, the MegAn starterpack in cream is only at 400 L$. No idea how long it will last but it is worth to run to the store to get the deal. The skin is cute with far set eyes, tons of options like 3 eyebrows colors, freckles, moles, cleavage.

I’ve been walking for some hours wearing this look, with those great MIEL boots, color changeable to fit about anything, a clutch and matching tights from Croire but there was something missing, hair. I’ve tried several different styles, but I was not happy with what i was finding until I saw an advertizing for Plume, a new hair shop by Fauve Beaumont. Fauve is proposing us original couture styles, with accessories like this cute hat for the Parisienne coiffure, which adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the look.

Boho 3

The Seasons Hunt was launched on saturday 15th January and will last for two whole weeks. I am not really into hunts, I can even say I am boycotting some of them for several reasons but in this case, I have to admit I am very pleasantly surprised as the designers have been very generous and are offering us awesome items, like the So Many Style Fur Shrug. Believe me, you want to look for it, but be warned, it is a well hidden one! One of the things I like about this hunt is you don’t have to find the gift in one store before being able to move to the next one. If you join the in world The Seasons Hunt(ers) group, you can find a notecard in the notices with the landmarks to the participating stores and tons of help from lovely people. So, you can choose to only visit the stores you like when you don’t have much time online or give a try at the whole list, which is really worth it.

What’s New Copycat?

No, I don’t believe my title is orginal, I actualy think it has been used before.

Plum 3

I am bored, bored with what I see on the feeds lately. Everywhere the same, everywhere the same new hair, everywhere the same new clothes, everywhere the same new accessories.

I am bored with so-called designers. Everywhere the same textures, everywhere the same sculpties. Everywhere the same RL inspirations. Hey look, the latest Lady Gaga excentricity! … declined in 10 SL versions.. how original!

I am bored with bloggers. Everywhere the same designers featured, everywhere the same reviews of new offered review copies, everywhere the same SL shadows and pictures, everywhere the same lack of content. I have to say some of my favorite bloggers have left and sadly, they were not replaced. The last one being Fayne Khandr who is on a indefinite blogging hiatus. I am not close to Fayne, i’ve spoken once or twice with her and she seemed to be a nice person but really, I miss her blog. She was one of the few I was looking forward for new articles as she was actualy offering us something to read, combined with a great sense of style and pictures telling a story. I don’t know why she has stopped, I am not close enough to bug her, I respect her choice, but yeah, I miss her blog posts.

I am bored with SL fashion. Doh wait… Am I different?

Plum 2

NOPE! I am not different! I do exactly the same! I only need to have a look at today’s style to know I am not different! It actualy started with me being sick, staying home, calling doctor and going to the pharmacy to get my medicines, 2 weeks ago. There, the owner of the drugstore was not wearing her white blouse like usual but she was actualy wearing a light grey woolen tunique with violet tights, black boots and belt and violet under-sweater. I was like “wow” she looks good with that. Then I’ve been thinking about what I could use in Second Life to create the same look. So, no, I am not original…

Yesterday, as I was looking for hair to finish the look, I’ve found that Truth Raquel style in my inventory. I actualy had never used it as it is very special and I had seen some other people doing a great job with it. One of those people being Leah McCullough. I remembered having seen a great picture of her wearing the same style. I mean no offense to others having used this style but Leah’s job is the one that had struck me at that time. Leah was kind enough to let me use her picture for my blog. See how pretty she is and how good the picture is.

LDD II Sep 10, 2007

But back to the point, when I saw that style, i immediately thought “yes! that is the one i need!” Not because it looks great, not because it works good with the style, but because someone else did a great job featuring it already!

and here is my version of it.
Plum

Sometimes, I won’t blog an outfit because I am pretty sure everyone will blog it and I don’t think I am good enough to do better, Sometimes I still blog it, because it is that or nothing at all. I wished I could have the choice to blog something else but then, I am looking at the new creations, everywhere the same, and unfortunately, I have to say very few things will make me want to buy them these last days, not even the bloggers featuring them, including me… and that is boring.

Bleu Canard

Hello,

Call it the way you like: teal, cyan, cerulean blue, turquoise, bleu pétrole. I call it duck blue and it is one of my favorite colors.

Bleu Canard 2

This morning, when I’ve found that skirt at MNK, I was all excited, as I like a lot the combination of taupe and bleu canard (yes, a little of french here as I often prefer the names we have for the colors). Then, a small nightmare began as I couldn’t find a matching top. I’ve tried brown but it was a bit sad. White or cream were not working either. Finaly, i’ve found that sweater at So Many Styles. I was looking for an occasion to use those jewels from Sigma I had picked up at a special price at Coppley Square some time ago; the thin teal line makes it a perfect addition to the outfit. I’ve also found an excuse to buy that bag you’ve seen in plenty of blogs, including Élan by Fayne Khandr (that is where i’ve picked the LM), it is from B@rose and definately gorgeous.

Bleu Canard

I was a bit disapointed while working on this outfit. I thought it would be easy to find tops with the bleu canard color but after visiting all my favorite shops, I’ve found very little choices. It is funny to see colors wearing the same name (teal) really don’t match.
Last time i went for some shopping in RL, it was a color in fashion, we could see it in plenty of shops but not in SL. I insist here, it is more blue than green and what we often see is a bit too green and too light.

I am often amazed when talking with people to see we can use so different names for the same color. I remember having a discussion with a friend about violet. I wanted violet mascara and he came back with mauve. So, I told him thank you but that is not the right color, what you brought me is much lighter than violet. And then, a very long discussion issued with comparisons like “mauve is kind of like lilac, while violet is like the flower, dark, a bit like aubergine”. In the end, he still calls it mauve.
