It’s All In The Background

“It’s All In The Background” is this week’s blogger challenge from Alysha Rennahan. A lot of bloggers will go for a simple white background and won’t post-process their pictures. Some in world windlight magic will make textures and prims look at their best. Sometimes, people who have no idea about using windlight will already feel they are not being shown what they can get in world. Pictures are taken pretty rapidly, minimal work but cropping and adding a background shadow. This is great when you have a lot of new releases to show. The focus is on the outfit, not on the picture in itself.

For sure, the avatar is the center of the focus but it looks a bit sad to me. So, I am usualy going for pictures with a background. But then, the nightmare of looking for the right background begins… according to the outfit, you need to find the appropriate sim, with the right colors, theme, etc. Sometimes, I don’t blog cause i haven’t found the background i was looking for. It adds a whole atmosphere to the picture, it can change completely the way people will feel about the outfit.

In the picture above, i’ve chosen a snackbar from YB Prod as a decor. A place where you can expect people to wear such clothes. As I’ve used a background, i want my avatar to pop out of the picture so i am post-processing. For the most part, the post-process work consists in adding shadows (my computer doesn’t handle in world shadows), and then to make an orton effect, playing with the layers blends. Finaly, I am adjusting the colors using curves, saturation and vibrance to have them look closer to the original snapshot though brighter and shinier.

Finaly, here are 2 pictures using roughly the same outfit, the same pose, the same chair from the Season Hunt. The background conditionates the post-process. I tried to use the exact same settings and the second picture turned out to be a green ugly blur. I had to do something completely different in the end.

The background is just another piece of the look. It can make it look sweet, lovely, trash, violent or commonplace so choose them wisely!
